Warrior Craft in Sculptural Form
A 1/3 scale sculptural reproduction of the National Treasure armour preserved at Kasuga Taisha in Nara.
The original Aka-ito Odoshi Ō-yoroi (Red-Laced Great Armour with Bamboo, Tiger, and Sparrow Ornaments) is widely regarded as one of the most magnificent surviving armours in Japan. Created not for battlefield use but as a sacred offering, it embodies the ceremonial refinement of medieval warrior culture.
Form and Lineage
The vivid scarlet silk lacing creates rhythmic structure across the armour’s surface, contrasted by elaborate gold metal fittings of exceptional intricacy.
The armour is richly adorned with symbolic motifs:
- Tiger — strength and vigilance
- Bamboo — resilience and integrity
- Sparrows — prosperity and flourishing lineage
More than one hundred sparrows are engraved across the surface. The tigers, rendered with a distinctly rounded, almost feline gentleness, reflect a uniquely Japanese artistic interpretation — as medieval craftsmen had never seen a living tiger.
Sacred Origin
Tradition attributes the armour either to Minamoto no Yoshitsune or to the cultural flourishing of the Ashikaga shogunate in the Muromachi period. Regardless of its precise origin, it was preserved not as a weapon of war, but as a devotional masterpiece.
Craftsmanship in Scale
This reproduction has been executed with disciplined attention to proportion and metal detailing, preserving the structural dignity and decorative density of the original.
It is not merely a scaled model, but a study in classical warrior craft.
