About Sakyo
Sakyo Inc. is a Japanese traditional crafts company rooted in over a century of craftsmanship. Founded in Japan and active through both physical spaces and its online store, Sakyo creates and presents cultural objects that carry meaning, intention, and refined beauty.
Our work centres on traditional Japanese doll making, particularly Hina dolls, as well as related cultural creations. Each piece is designed not only to be visually beautiful, but to embody the values and wishes that have long been part of Japanese seasonal customs and everyday life.
Sakyo’s approach is quiet and deliberate. We value authenticity, clarity, and respect for tradition, while ensuring our work remains relevant to contemporary lifestyles and international audiences.
History
Sakyo’s origins date back to 1923, when its founder, Rinzo Mochizuki, established himself as a metal fittings craftsman. From the earliest days, the company was involved in the creation of components for Hina dolls, steadily developing specialised techniques in Shizuoka, Japan.
After a temporary suspension during World War II, the business resumed production and, in 1951, was formally reestablished as Mochizuki Doll Shop. Operations expanded to Osaka and Tokyo, and Sakyo built a strong reputation for reliability, quality, and craftsmanship.
In the 1980s, under third-generation leadership, the company was renamed Sakyou Inc., marking a new phase of refinement and innovation. Throughout the following decades, Sakyo received multiple awards and official recognition for its technical excellence, including certification as a traditional crafts producer by the Japan Doll Association.
Craftsmanship
At the heart of Sakyou is a philosophy passed down since its founding: to never mislead the customer, and to offer only genuine value.
Craftsmanship at Sakyou is defined by honesty, precision, and respect for materials and tradition. Every piece is created with careful attention to form, balance, and purpose, guided by techniques refined over generations.
While deeply rooted in tradition, Sakyou also embraces thoughtful innovation. Collaborations with designers, original brands, modern reinterpretations of classic forms, and semi-custom ordering services all reflect our commitment to keeping traditional craftsmanship alive and meaningful today.
Sakyou continues to preserve and pass on artisanal skills, ensuring that the spirit, integrity, and sincerity of Japanese craftsmanship remain intact for future generations.
